Bharat Bamboo Mission

Bamboo is a versatile group of plants which is capable of providing ecological, economic and livelihood security of the people. India has the highest area (13.96 million HA.) under bamboo and is the second richest country, in terms of bamboo diversity with 136 species.
Inspite of growing stock both within & outside forests, India is a net importer of bamboo. It means that there are greater opportunities to harness the market potential by increasing its production & ensuring establishment of a proper value chain ecosystem.

Uses:

In most of the hilly states of the country, Bamboo is used as building material, construction material, besides having a potential niche market in other countries as well with various traditional & an ever-increasing range of contemporary uses or applications in the industries like:
  • Construction
  • Furniture
  • Textile
  • Food
  • Energy Production
  • Herbal and Medicine
  • Fuel, Etc.
Hence the emphasis now will be on propagation of quality plantations of bamboo of the commercially required species, product development & value addition.
Thus ensuring a complete value chain for growth of the bamboo sector to boost bamboo based industry which would also have a ripple effect on rural economy.
